KWARA GROUP WRITES SARAKI TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT

Towards 2023 ;

Saraki

A group going by the aegis of the Kwara State Indigenes Association Worldwide KSIAW has urged former Senate President Bukola Saraki to run for president as build up towards the 2023 presidential election continues.

In a letter signed by Alhaji Olanipekun Azeez, president and Mohammed Anwalu Secretary and delivered at the GRA Ilorin home of Saraki during the annual  welfare and empowerment programme of Bukola Saraki foundation, the group said “Nigeria has been at cross roads since 2015 when APC came into power. There has been a huge decay in all ramifications. All facets of our polity have been so affected by the failure of this APC government.  There is great need for a change in the system.

“We strongly believe that you, Bukola Saraki have the pedigree that can turn around Nigeria for the better. You also have the requisite qualification to lead our dear country Nigeria to the next level.

“During your tenure as Governor of Kwara state, you, Bukola Saraki made Kwara state a strong agricultural production base with your relationship with white farmers from Zimbabwe. This is one of your lasting legacies because the agric reforms which created the famed Shonga Farms is being emulated by other states.

“Your interest in development of solid infrastructure in Kwara state is for the records. Power generation and distribution in Ilorin is second to non in the country.

“In medicine, You, Bukola Saraki succeded in developing a medical format for mother and child while improving on the state owned medical facilities across Kwara state.

“Your tenure as Senate president saw Nigerian national Assembly in robust performance as compared to the 9th national assembly seen by many as a rubber stamp of the executive ever grappling with issues of character.

According to the group, “You, Bukola Saraki are connected both locally and internationally, very youthful, vibrant, energetic and confident and have know-how across medicine, commerce and industry.

“When these add up with your solid links with PDP leadership, you are no doubt a presidential material. Please run for it. Bukola Saraki for president. You are highly qualified so have our support.

Receiving the letter on behalf of the former senate president, Hon Lekan Osinubi a personal assistant added that he was “yet to convey it to oga. I’ll surely do”.

PLEASE FOLLOW ME TO ENUGU UNITY PARK; GOV UGWUANYI’S UNSUNG LEGACY

Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi

TOURISM;

By Fred Iwenjora

Before now, I only drove past the long stretch of pine woodlands in between the famous WAEC bus stop and Okpara Square stretching into the Enugu government house grounds Bisala Road without a bother whenever I visit Enugu. One night, I noticed a mighty sculpture of a lion at the well lit park and shuddered.

So when a friend asked me to join him to Enugu Unity Park for a meeting the next Sunday, it was a rattle of excitement on my entire body which couldn’t be bottled in. I itched to see that lion which I saw glowing at night more clearly and closely. I could not wait to see first hand what other things that were tucked into that parcel of land which is cut short by a gigantic court building at the other side.

I urge you to very kindly follow me as we tour Enugu Unity Park, magnificient leisure and tourism edifice gradually earning Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi fame and positive commendations.

In fact, Enugu Unity Park is indeed being seen by many as one of Governor Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi’s unsung legacies. And considering the number of visitors milling around, into and out of the park during the weekends using the two lanes of the stretch of road around Okpara square as car park, those thinking like this seem to be correct in their thoughts.

As you enter the gates of the park and look left of its well paved lawns, a white plaque beholds you and reads; Developed and commissioned by Governor of Enugu state Rt. Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on 29 May, 2021. This is as if warning you to make no mistakes about the fact of who built it.

First there was an instant confusion on my part as to where to begin my tour. I wondered whether to start from under the belly of the lion, the most popular area of the park which stares at every visitor inviting photo shoots or to walk the lawns. I ended up starting with a round and about tour through the lawns reaching all the ends of the park. It was a real seaty tour. It struck me that one might get lost to his companions in this expansive park. And I did get lost to my friends and it required a phone call to track me.

I watched with delight how families after families, friends after friends, groups after groups, lovers after lovers took spots inside the expansive park to relax in leisure without the bowels of the park complaining. It basically swallowed the thousands of visitors and seemingly wiped its mouth clean showing no traces.  The space was ample enough to contain all and the visitors where streaming in and filing out.

The shed of dry pine leaves and foliage caused by the humid end of year weather created a surreal feeling.

Noteworthy are art works of mounmental proportions literring the park, the biggest being the two storey Roaring Lion on concrete created by ace sculptor, Okay Ikenegbu of the Institute of Management and Technology Enugu.

I gathered that the Roaring Lion houses two fully airconditioned conference halls and it looms large where ever you were in and around the park.

Other notable sculptures decorating the Unity Park are the soccer tapping elephant, the crowing cockrel as well as other abstract sculpts.

I also saw artificial streams, grooves and waterways.

Children were also put into great consideration as there is a children - only section with swings and all forms of jangrover where parents filled all the spaces.

I saw many groups in meeting sessions, families and friends in lunch session while some lovers found slightly flower- hooded corners for romantic chats in the free- entry leisure atmosphere littered with concrete seats and benches.

Investigation revealed that the park closes to the public at 6pm daily.

Again it was gathered that visitors were allowed to bring along their food to share but not alcohol.

It is interesting to note that while at the park savoring and marveling at the initiative of providing such a free leisure atmosphere for the people on that Sunday evening, a siren blared. The sound of the siren grew louder and closer and behold it was the man they call Gburugburu sauntering into the park to see the extent of its continuous development. He was clad in his usual white.

I gathered that this visit is regular and unscheduled since the park was comissioned.

These spontenous visits no doubt underscore the interest he has in the leisure project.

A source also intimated that that the park has not yet reached the level of the vision Gov Ugwuanyi envisaged for it which is reason for his regular visits.

The governor’s entry interrupted a meeting I was setting up with star actress Ndidi Obi of Nneka the pretty Serpent fame, head of the management team overseeing the park.

However I left with many lessons which include that; Enugu people itch for family outing leisure spaces as has always been from time when street parks dotted the city like;  Ngwo park, Onwudiwe park both in Uwani, Ejindu Park at Coal camp, Osadebe street park, Edward Nnaji park in New Haven and Abakpa, Murtala Mohammed Park around Aria road/new market and the famous Polo park which has now become Shoprite.

I also learnt that Governor Ugwuanyi is determined and tenacious when it comes to pursuing things after his heart albeit very subtley. And one of the things after his heart is art, entertainmnet and leisure.

I learnt that if not his tenacity, he may not have invested in many artists and sculptors to produce the many giant artworks for installation in this park or the artisans employed forever in the on going constructions and maintenance.

If Gburugburu were not tenacious and determined, he may not have created time to visit the project every now and then to see progress of work.

Again Gburugburu  is a lover of humanity whom caged by government bureucracy and red tapism wants to meet with the people every now and then and the Enugu Unity Park affords him an escape and the opportunity to see the people and interact even if it was once a week.

As the journey to 2023 when he vacates office trudges on and the era of counting achievements and blessings come and if some of his other achievements don’t count , the Enugu Unity Park may just be one of Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s everlasting legacies which if maintained by coming administrations would speak for him always. It resonates with the people.

LETTER TO DAVID ADELEKE BY FRED IWENJORA

Adedoyin and some of her children

I like to first of all congratulate you on the recent big test of your popularity by your own good self, an exam which you passed out in excellence.

Indeed many have imitated you and have tried to test their own popularity. But they have failed woefully.

Asking for a whooping N100m from those who love you and in a few hours time receiving more than you requested from high worth friends and fans is a world record act.

It shows you are indeed beloved to God and man.

Babatunde Fashola with a member of the home

It implies that the long hands of the Almighty God have been long upon you from your conception, birth and up bringing.

No wonder you are named DAVID after the king of Israel, a man after God's heart.

Currently in the news is your plan to spend the money on various charities and orphanages any moment from now.

It is also known that a committee of erudite Nigerians including Professors and Pastors has been constituted to make a selection of who deserves what. Much kudos to you on this high level of thoughtfulness. I doff my hat.

Laja Adedoyin

Brother David, it is on the basis of this planned charity drive that I write you this special letter; an appeal.

I wish to appeal and solicit that you please add Hearts of Gold Children's Hospice into your list of beneficiaries.

Ooh yes ... Hearts of Hold Children Hospice, Lagos, don't forget.

And again, Hearts of Gold children Hospice, Lagos, please remember.

I appeal that you and the committee very kindly but very urgently pay a surprise visit to Hearts of Gold Children Hospice, a home for terminally ill children located just about the foot bridge of Masha road, Surulere, Lagos.

Caveat.

Kindly note that I was not contracted to make this appeal. I make it by me, myself and I conviction as a human being, a Nigeria  visitor to the home.

I am well convinced that only one visit is all it takes for you to get convinced that the children at Hearts of Gold deserve to be part of your charity drive at this time.

It is home to children who are rejected and left to die by society because they seem to have no hope of living.

Why I urge you to visit

David, I want you to see first hand that such special helpless children with special needs exist under the care of Nigeria's Mother Theresa, Laja Theresa Adedoyin.

Adedoyin left a very lucrative engagement in entertainment, arts and culture business in the UK to “serve God in the most unique way”.

Amaka

A visit to Hearts of Gold Children Hospice will make you hear how an accident left Adedoyin paralyzed for several months causing her to promise God that if she got a healing, she would devote her life to His service. She got a healing and set up the home putting her vast experience as social worker and care giver to prime use in almost two decades.

King David, you are also very likely to find out during the visit to Hearts of Gold that Adedoyin made good her pledge to God by first converting her bungalow into a hostel and then accepting many of these children into the home.

Some time during his tenure as Governor of Lagos state, current minister for works and housing Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN took note of a selfless life of service and sacrifice and dashed the children a befitting home as birthday present.

Again, a visit to Hearts of Gold Children Hospice will make you see the long standing devotion to her children by Adedoyin in concert with her team of doctors, nurses as well as many other volunteers.

Ever cheerful Adedoyin does not fail to express gratitude to all those individuals and corporate organizations who have continued to support the home in the years.

Please Brother David, I want you to visit Hearts of Gold Children Hospice, Lagos because the children are expecting to welcome you.

One of the children who will be over excited at Davido's visit to Hearts of Gold Children Hospice is pretty Amaka Adedoyin.

Amaka a 16 years old beautiful girl was born without anus and needs very urgent help.

According to Laja Adedoyin in a recent Meta (fb) post, Amaka had undergone the first set of corrective surgeries in Spain and needs more.

Davido

So my dear King Dave, this is just a gentle reminder, an appeal that you remember Hearts of Gold Children Hospice in your journey in philanthropy.

That's what on my mind right now

Thanks to Mark for giving this voice.

Families of kidnapped victims beseige chimkasimma services

Family members of kidnapped victims of Abuja bound Chimkasimma services bus  stormed the Enugu terminal of the company to hear the real story of how it happened.

A fully loaded Sienna bus had taken off from Enugu terminal of the company yesterday only for news of the kidnapping to start circulating early evening.

ECD reporter who was at the scene said parents of a passenger said to be a female pharmacist were early callers at the terminal where the transport company was booking today's travelers.

Eye witnesses say the distraught family of the pharmacist  created a big scene at the terminal blocking the entrance with many cars and trucks and preventing vehicles from loading.

Narrating how the news of the kidnapping reached the family, mother of the pharmacist said her daughter departed yesterday morning from Enugu to abuja.

She said she was on phone with her daughter until about 3 pm when she was not picking any calls.

Continuing she said "it was when a voice which said he was an officer of the police force announcing the kidnap that all hell was let lose.

No one has slept a wink since yesterday when the news broke.

Also speaking,  an uncle of the kidnapped pharmacist a former member of the federal House reps,  Hon USA Igwesi wondered why the company should open their offices when there was a serious issue on ground.

According to him, "the company did not call anyone of the victims families despite that there's a manifest

Rather the company banged the phone on us for daring to ask questions. It is not morally right for chimkasimma services to open their office to load passengers when there's an issue on ground. In more saner countries, an incident office should have been opened by now to give information to victims families but not in Nigeria where anything goes. The company even has effrontery to load passengers this morning. We have every right to conclude that the company is working in tandem with kidnappers. To make the matters worse, a voice call to the MD was banged on us. And he is even on the run.

ECD also gathered that  a Reverend, a Reverend  sister as well as a US bound passenger were in the bus when kidnappers struck around Kogi state demanding N50m for each of the passengers.

WHY CROSS RIVER STATE MUST HAVE A HAND IN HIS BURIAL

Feladey

  • By Fred Iwenjora

Condolence messages continue to inundate the Lagos home of star artiste, guitarist, composer, singer, songwriter, music producer Alex Felix Odey better known in Nigerian music circles as Feladey.

The master guitarist died after a brief illness on July 28 2021 at a Lagos Hospital. He just turned 70 in January 2021.

As at the time of filling this, the Condolence register set up at his residence had been filled with emotional tributes from fans, friends and well wishers who visit to commiserate with his family on his passing.

Feladey hailed from Okuni, Ikom LGA of Cross River state but was raised across south eastern cities of Enugu, Awo Omamma, Abakaliki, Ogoja,(his mother’s place) Afikpo, Owerri, Aba, PH etc.

He had followed in the footsteps of his fellow compatriots from Cross River state like Inyang Henshaw, Peter Effiom, Prince Nico, Commy Bassey and a host of others who projected the character of Cross River state as a major force in the aggregate of musicians in Nigeria in the early 70s.

Starting out after the civil war right from secondary school, Feladey first armed himself with prodigious knowledge of several musical instruments, became an advocate of live band music.

His well perfected guitar skills was highly sought after by many bands too numerous to mention.

He played with the best bands in Nigeria including the famous Heads Funk with whom he made five albums.

Before then Feladey had had a hand in 2nd Generations, The Funkees, Wrinkars Experience, De Nono, Red Parrots, Labamba and with Bongos Ikwue and the Groovies to mention but just a few etc.

With the Groovies he recorded Say a little prayer just as his guitars are very audible in Bongos Ikwue’s famous hit track Cock Crow at dawn.

He later was in- house producer at wave making music companies like Tabansi Records as well as Japex Records through which he released his first album Japadodo.

His band Labamba was a regular backing band for hit artistes of those years.

His gregarious character which saw him performing across the nation gathered for him a huge fan base.

Some of his many solo albums which include songs like Japadodo, Sawalele, One pound no balance, Band Boy, Watershed,  Angelina, etc. made Feladey to feel at home in any parts of Nigeria.

Sawalele and One pound no balance were special remakes as tribute to highlife music icons as Rex Lawson and Osita Osadebe respectively. And they endeared him to many fans.

Many are of the opinion that with his pioneering contributions to Nigerian music and musicianship and impacting on the nation’s pop culture through his many albums either as group or as solo artiste as well as his incredible mastery of the guitar, Feladey is well assured a place in the Cross River state music hall of fame.

As a musical ambassador exported from Cross River state to the world, he was a big inspiration to younger generation of musicians in Nigeria in general and Cross River state in particular including Sunny Neji, Edward Blackky Inyang and a host of others.

In fact, many count Cross River state as a major music state in Nigeria because of the artistic imprints of people like Feladey.

Former Governor of Cross Rivers state and initiator of the internationally renowned Calabar Carnival Mr. Donald Duke recognised this artistic imprints and invited him as well as other notable Cross River state born artistes as consultants to the carnival. He even was inspired to record an album for the carnival.

This is the best time to rally together to give Feladey a befitting burial whenever the family is set for the event.

The Cross River state government must champion and spearhead the funeral of an illustrious son because it would rekindle interest in the state and its cultural heritage which he lived to propagate.

That is the best way to go.

Former Governor of Rivers state Sir, Dr Peter Otunuya Odili turned 73 years on August 15, 1948.

FRED IWENJORA explores his life and times as contained in his book; Conscience and History, My Story with special emphasis on how he met his amiable wife Justice Mary Odili, loved her at first sight and the drama during the arrival of their first child Adaeze.

Enjoy the respected physician in his own words as we burrow through one of the chapters in the book; Mary and I building our family.

He writes “I have always had this culture of “impatience for time wasted on queues”, especially for food, moreso if it was avoidable.  And so by the time I became a medical student at the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria this attitude had become a habit.  I was either amongst the ‘1st XI’ at the dining hall or amongst the last ’X1’.

On this fateful afternoon in 1972, at about 1.30pm while killing time in a lecture room on the first floor of the science building, studying and waiting to do last ‘XI’ lunch, three girls walked into the lecture hall.  The chatting and giggling caught my attention and I looked up from my Physiology book.  My eyes fell on one of the girls and something snapped in me and I said to myself “this is your wife”.  I had never seen her before that moment and had no idea who she was.  I watched them drop their books to ‘colonise’ seats for their afternoon lectures.  Again this was the practice on campus those post-civil war years.  Due to the paucity of facilities and infrastructure, lecture halls were shared between various disciplines and there were not enough seats for all the students, so to be sure of good seat upfront, serious students had to go in advance of the lectures and secure seats with their books.  The three girls took no notice of the young man who was gazing at one of them.  They left the hall having secured seats for whatever lecture it was they were programmed for.  I immediately walked up to where they had placed their books and opened the one placed by this unknown ‘angel’ that had me transfixed at first sight. I saw her names – Mary Nzenwa – Faculty of Law, instantly internalized the information and went back to my seat.  I could not concentrate anymore on what I was studying before the entrance of the three girls. I closed my book happily and was consumed with thoughts of this little angel Mary that my heart told me shall be my wife, even after, I silently watched Mary for the next three and half years without her knowing or even suspecting.  The Enugu campus was a relatively small place and it was easy to shadow anyone of interest.  I monitored Mary, I gathered all basic necessary information about her, but made no moves whatsoever to approach her.

 TURNING POINT

“Like all things of destiny one fateful evening an old CKC friend Papp Alumona who was a law student on campus requested my company for a birthday party of one of his colleagues in their faculty – I obliged, it turned out that Alumona had in his company, his girlfriend and her roommate who turned out to be my dream girl ‘Mary’. You can imagine the internal excitement I felt at this unforeseen, unplanned and fortuitous coincidence. Mary and I met for the first time and got introduced to each other.  We clicked.  The ‘bug’ I had harboured for three and half years also caught her that night.  Our chemistry ‘jived’, we bonded. Nature, time, and opportunity met at destiny’s door.  We both fell instantly in LOVE, and got married 18 months after.  We have remained in love ever since.  This is our 36½ years in love non-stop and connubial bliss for 35 years. Mary was then in her final year as a law student.  She graduated from the faculty of law, and proceeded to the Law school in Lagos 1976/77 while I was in my final year in medicine.  We graduated about the same time, me from medicine and she from the law school.  I commenced my internship at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (U.B.T.H.) in July 1977 while she was posted to Ministry of Justice Abeokuta, Ogun State for her NYSC programme.  By 26th August 1977 we got married at Oredo Local Government council Registry Benin, Edo State after one month as a house officer and Mary’s one month as NYSC member.

 A SIMPLE BUT UNIQUE WEDDING

“Our wedding was very unique in its simplicity.  At the registry there were just four of us (Mary, myself, Agnes, Mary’s immediate younger sister and Humphrey Ukpabi, my house officer colleague).  When we got back to the house officers’ quarters, I just called my colleagues to join us in our one – room apartment for a reception.  Our wedding mass was at St. Paul’s Cathedral Parish, Benin City; present were Prof. & Mrs. Linus Ajabor, Mrs. Faith Ene and the Reverend Father (an Irish priest).  In all, the total cost of all the ceremonies including cost of our wedding dresses and suit, rings etc was N280.00.  My salary as a house officer was N400.00 per month and Mary’s NYSC monthly allowance was N170.00.

AN EXTRAORDINARY AND NOBLE FATHER IN- LAW

“Anyone familiar with marriage to an Mbaise girl would find this story hard to believe because getting married to an Mbaise girl is probably the most expensive marriage in Nigeria.  My Late father in-law was a very extra ordinary and noble gentleman.  His kind doesn’t happen commonly and not many are privileged to be as lucky as I am to have had him as my father in-law.  Once Mary spoke to her parents about me, because of their love for her and their confidence in her judgement, I was accepted without any of the usual traditional protocols.  I simply made the traditional initial introductory visit with a few bottles of drink.  When I enquired about details of the real traditional rites, my father in-law simply said to me that I should not be in a hurry because I would need a few years to be able to cope with the cost implications of that.  He said it was not a business for a one month old graduate.  He was right and gracious.  When we finally performed the full rites in 1982, it was clear that the Royal Father knew what he was talking about.  We were ready and fulfilled the traditional rites in style and pomp but in full appreciation of the magnanimity and greatness of the mind, attitude and disposition of my father in-law HRH Eze (Barr.) B.S.C. Nzenwa. Over the years we became so close that I regarded him as a father, firend, confidant and political guide.

Dr. Peter Odili and family

DRAMA

Odili delves into the drama that heralded the arrival of their first daughter beginning with a difficult Chief Inspector who doubted their marriage to effect a reposting to Benin. According to him “the ground was now set for the building of a new nuclear family of Mary and Peter Odili by end of August 1977.  We tried to arrange the transfer of Mary’s posting to Benin City from Abeokuta but had to grapple with the reluctance of a difficult Chief Inspector, a Mr. Shoyege who even had the impudence of doubting the veracity of our marriage certificate.  Anyway, we eventually secured a transfer for Mary with a four month extension for frequent trips out of Abeokuta to Benin City.  We were glad and relieved to be together in Benin City and saved the risk of me traveling after call-duties. Mary finished her NYSC service in September 1978 as I was starting mine, but luckily at University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Benin City.  It was convenient for us to then settle down for the next on year together under one roof in UBTH which became our first home as husband and wife.  Adaeze our first child arrived one month ahead of schedule on the 19th of July 1979, a new family was fully born.

 MORE DRAMA

“However, before Ada came.  Mary and I went through a nightmarish experience as a young couple.  Mary was pregnant for what could have been our first, in early 1978.  At her 26th week of pregnancy, a week after her antenatal clinic visit, without any premonition, she had a full blown eclampsia and was in a coma for 3 days.  It took God’s Grace and the extreme professional commitment of the staff of University of Benin Teaching Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology (UBTH O & G) department to save her life.  We lost the baby but I was grateful to God for sparing Mary.

Those days of Mary in coma are days I could never forget.  I was in a frightened daze for 3 days until Mary came round.  I could neither touch a cup of water nor tea, take my bath, nor change my clothes as I simply could not leave the ward.  I simply ignored all entreaties.  Mary’s consultant now Prof. Fidelis Micheal E. Diejomaoh, and his team.  Prof. Linus N Ajabor, was then head of department, under whom I worked as an intern for 3 months, their wives and associates like Adesua Eimunjeze, who were non-medical people, all got involved in managing the emergency.  We shall remain eternally grateful to all of them for the extra ordinary love, friendship and commitment they exhibited during those most dreadful days of crisis in our early married life.  We have since then become very close family friends and developed ties that have endured till date and they are permanent guests at every important event in our lives since then.

 FIRST PRIVATE PRATICE

Young Dr. Peter Odili had made up his mind early to pursue the practice of his course of study as soon as he got qualified. He narrates that; “by August 1979, as I was concluding my NYSC assignment in UBTH, I secured employment at Hebgreen Medical and Dental Centre in Port-Harcourt, having made up my mind to go home to my State of origin, Rivers, and get into the private medical sector.  This decision was not as easy as it sounds because in the course of two years of work in UBTH I had made good impressions on my consultants and so had offers for residency programmes from the departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Medicine and Psychiatry. Rejecting these offers from a centre of excellence as UBTH at that time, was neither easy to make nor easy to understand by others.  But I was clear in my mind about what I wanted to do with my medical career and the future.  So, I headed home to PH and started work as a staff physician on a monthly salary of N1,000 at Hebgreen Medical and Dental Centre, 130 Bonny Street, Port-Harcourt under the Late Dr. H.E.B. Green, a very fine gentleman, dental consultant and physician –at ex-military officer.

Mary was now a nursing mother with Adaeze just a few weeks old and so I had to quickly arrange for them to join me in Port Harcourt, immediately, by the end of September 1979 had settled down fully in Port Harcourt.

THE BIRTH OF PAMO

“Within my first month of stay in Port Harcourt, I took a survey of the medical facilities available in the city and my findings informed my advice to my dear wife to be extremely careful about our domestic hygiene and health related issues.  By April 1980 I was compelled by principle to voluntarily resign my appointment with Hebgreen.  I then set up a new practice under the supervision of Late Dr. James Ene Henshaw (a retired director of medical services in Rivers State), as the clinician in charge.  This was the birth of what later became Pamo clinics (acronym for Peter Adaeze Mary and Others) when I attained the then statutory post qualification age of 5 years for independent private practice by 1982 in a rented flat of N4,800.00 p.a. the floor tiles of which I personally laid.  The first year was very tough. Mary and I had to judiciously apply every kobo that we could save from the practice and from her meager monthly salary of N320 to sustain the practice.  By 1984, PAMO Clinics and Hospitals Group became a Limited Liability Company and had earned her first million naira and had become one of the best-run private hospitals in Port Harcourt, if not the best.

 IN LOVE WITH UBTH

“Our three other children Chinelo, Peter and Njideka were born at nearly equal time spacing of between 15-18 months in between births, By Mary’s 52nd birthday she had become the happy mother of 4 kids.  All were delivered by caesarean birth at the UBTH Benin- City except for our last child Njide who was delivered at Prof. Ajabor’s Anita Summit Hospital Benin City.  All our kids were delivered by Prof. F.M.E. Diejomah.  This implied of course that we were travelling from Port Harcourt to Benin City for ante-natal care and delivery between 1980 and 1984, a clear testament of our faith in the staff and facilities at the UBTH at the time, especially Prof. F.M.E. Diejomah and the O & G department of UBTH.  The years between 1980 and 1984 were very busy and laborious for us, raising our lovely kids, Mary working hard as a magistrate and me building the practice that had become a reference centre in town with not less than 3 teaching hospital consultants popping in on a daily basis to see special patients and partake in the daily pounded yam lunch that Mary personally prepared with her special fresh fish Nsala soup (an Ndoni special treat) and other soups.

 MILLIONAIRE DOCTOR

This period saw us grow from a young struggling couple to comfortable young millionaire parents of 4 kids and employers of labour, owners of a country home, purpose – built hospital and staff quarters.  We graduated from self-driven Lada car to a brand new Mercedes Bens 200 air-conditioned and tinted glasses, metallic green colour imported in December 1981.  Mary also had her official car and driver.  We had, by the Grace of God, arrived, as the saying goes and had become a source of help and succor to our extended family relations and friends.  One of the remarkable turning points in our affairs and the progress of our hospital during this period was the rapid growth in patient attendance following our offer of free treatment to all staff and students of Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA) at its inception in 1981 under the Rectorship of monsignor Ezeanya, later Archbishop of blessed memory.  This was in response to the appeal by the rector to CKC Onitsha Old Boys Association PH for support to the insatiate.  The rector was an old student of CKC.  We volunteered this free service as our personal contribution to CIWA, and we believe God in response blessed PAMO.
