POLICE SCORE HIGH POINTS; REHABILITATE LAGOS ROAD

Police men @ work

In what many consider a high point in corporate social responsibility activity, men of Lagos State Police Command, Ejigbo Division led by the DPO, CSP Olabisi Okuwobi have scored high points by embarking on rehabilitation and patching of a popular road in Lagos.

The very popular Biliaminu Akinsaya road off NNPC road Ejigbo known for regular accidents and traffic congestions got a special touch when the DPO Okuwobi
mobilised her officers with bags of granite, sand and cement to fill up the potholes and craters which obstruct the free flow of traffic on the link which connects Ejigbo and Ajao estate

Apparently irked by the huge traffic congestion on roads leading to Ejigbo and its environs, caused by the deep craters on the road,  DPO Okuwobi mobilised her men to seek palliative measure yet.

Eye witnesses say the officers moved materials from their station to the site and started patching the pot holes to the admiration of the residents, members of the Neighborhood Watch and PCRC some of whom volunteered to join in the work.

This is the first time Nigerians are seeing such a positive gesture from the Nigeria Police seen by many as controversial.

This is not the first time DPO, CSP Okuwobi will lead positive activity that project good image for the Police in Ejigbo aside from her regular duties of law maintenance which has seen her recovering stolen cars and generally projecting a crime free environment.

She is a regular sight controlling free flow of traffic at notorious congestion spots around the division.

Meanwhile, words of commendation continue to reach DPO Okuwobi both from the genera pubic as well as from Police hierarchy for scoring these high point.

AIFF 2019; NO REPRIEVE FOR SOUTH AFRICAN FILMS AS WORLD FILM MAKERS CONVERGE ON ABUJA

Duker
129 films from world film makers will screen at the 2019 edition of Abuja International Film Festival starting from 22- 25 October 2019.

South Africa which features in AIFF over the years was banned from this year’s edition due to xenophobia against Africans including Nigerians.

All the festival events including the workshops, seminars and master classes and parties hold at the Silverbird Cinemas, Abuja

The 16 years old film festival considered by many as the catalyst to the growth of film entertainment in the Nigeria’s capital city began September 25th 2004.

Festival Director Fidelis Duker says “This is the 16th edition of the Abuja international film festival that started in 2004 and we have consistently kept to upholding the global standards of film festivals.

“This year, the festival will feature screenings of 129 films from 56 countries over 4 days. The films cut across different genres. The festival will have its conventional panel discussions and workshops and masterclasses.  The festival will not devoid of its regular industry parties.

“Normally film festivals follow a normal pattern of screenings and discussions.  but we are bringing a twist to it this time around with two masterclasses in script development and acting.

ON BAN ON SOUTH AFRICA
"South African films will not feature this year, Next year is another time. Reason is obvious. You remember the Xenophobic attacks on fellow Africans.

FUNDING
Duker decries the lack of funding fr the festival since inception especially frm FCT which benefits from its tourism pecks. According to him  “Like most events and projects ... funding has been a challenge for us and I can confirm we have been under this global challenge affecting the festival circuit.  However I can confirm we have devised creative ways of surmounting this challenge.  I can also confirm we have not received any major support from the FCT even though the festival has been endorsed by the FCT

TOURISM VISTA
"At inception, the idea was to give young filmmakers a platform to exhibit their films because before the Abuja  International film festival, there was no platform  for them,  no one saw their films and we decided to give them such a platform.  Also prior to 2004, Abuja was only about politics....no form of entertainment and we were able to bring filmmakers to Abuja and 16 years down the line, the film industry has grown tremendously in abuja with vibrant film industry.

SO FAR SO GOOD

"Interestingly the city has several cinemas which were non existent 16 years ago.  I think we have been able to achieve some of our objectives.  The festival has also attracted tourists in good numbers. The festival has contributed in opening the entertainment and creative industry space to talents in Abuja and beyond. We have contributed to developing the tourism landscape in Abuja.  Talent discovery has been one of our major achievements.  So many young filmmakers debuted at Abuja International film festival and are today some of the best in the industry today.  In short we have contributed to building capacity and talent for the industry

FRANKFURT; MAN WHO PUSHED 8 YEAR-OLD BOY UNTO TRAIN YET TO SAY WHY

Frankfurt Main Train station
The man who pushed a woman and her 8 year-old son unto train tracks at Frankfurt Train station Monday has so far refused to talk about his motive.

An 8-year-old boy was killed on Monday when a man shoved him in front of a moving train entering Frankfurt's main station, German police said.

The boy's mother was also pushed from the platform, but was able to roll to the side and save herself.
According to police, witnesses said the attacker also tried to push another person onto the tracks as the Intercity Express train was approaching, but the would-be victim managed to avoid falling onto the track.

The suspect was chased through the station by passengers who managed to tackle him to the ground. Police later confirmed a 40-year-old African man had been arrested.

The incident happened at about 10am on Monday on platform seven of the station, which is one of Germany’s busiest. The boy’s mother was being treated for shock, according to a police spokeswoman.

German law enforcement authorities said the 40-year-old man did not know the victims, and has so far refused to speak about his motive. Police said that an investigation is underway, and video footage of the incident will be examined.

The suspect initially fled the scene and managed to exit the station, but by-standers held him up outside the building.

The killing prompted a "massive [police] deployment" at Frankfurt's central train station, a police spokeswoman said. Firefighters were also at the scene. Authorities closed six of the platforms for several hours, causing train delays and cancellations.
Commenting on the incident, the premier of the state of Hesse, Volker Bouffier, said he was "stunned" by the "revolting act."

The latest tragedy comes only nine days after a 28-year-old man allegedly pushed a 34-year-old mother into the path of an oncoming train in the northwest town of Voerde, killing her.

The two incidents are likely to trigger a debate over increasing security at German train stations. On Tuesday, Martin Burkert, a Social Democrat (SPD)  focusing on transport policy, told Germany's mass circulation newspaper Bild that there was not enough supervision on Germany's train platforms, and that train stations lacked enough police.
