EJIGBO MARKET BOILS OVER PONZI SCHEME

Katakata is currently rocking Ejigbo community market following  the activity of a Ponzi scheme which as usual promised millions but delivered nothing.

The Ponzi scheme which promised undisclosed quantity of food items and cash worth N200k at the end of 2021 yielded  nothing after all leaving the community under fire.

As you read this, the office of iyaloja of Ejigbo market reveal that there's no day it is not beseiged with complaints about lost investment

ECD investigation revealed that the Ponzi organisation named Smile Again promoted by one society woman names withheld entered Ejigbo market using a social influencer, a renowned Igbo woman leader (names also  withheld)who lured traders of the market to invest

The igbo women leader to make her task easier,  also connected another influential big fish in the market to invest. Her investment must have encouraged many others to join.

Before long, all traders of the market had put in so much money running into millions with hope of yielding much only to fail them at harvest time.

Already gist have it that the igbo woman leader who marketed the Ponzi inside market has been on the run after angry investors beat her up with threat to kill her if she did not return their investment.

The organiser of the scheme on her own part is said to be underground not picking calls because the calls won't stop coming.

One of the victims,  a groundnut seller who planned to get a shop and stop street trading was full of tears as she lamented how she was fleeced

According to her, "I thought this investment will yield me the desired money to get a shop. In fact I really don't know what to do. Even the food items I had hoped on as they promised did not come"

However, in defence of the organisers, one of the traders who spoke under condition of anonymity said the "organiser of the scheme are genuine and may have had a little setback which they will overcome"

AVIATION; ONE YEAR OF FLYING UNITED NIGERIA..SO FAR SO GOOD

United Nigeria Airline in flight; Photo; Wikipidea

By Fred Iwenjora
It is about one year since the first flight of United Nigeria Airlines took off from Murtala Mohammed Airport Ikeja, flew many nautical miles east and landed at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu

That maiden flight on February 12, 2021 took place just about 11 days after the airline got certified to fly in Nigeria.

By the way, United Nigeria Airline is owned by United Airlines Nigeria  Ltd, one of the biggest of the diverse business interests of Anambra born billionaire business mogul Dr Obiorah Okonkwo, Dikeora of Ogidi, Anambra state.

Dr. Obiora Okonkwo

After its first acquisition of 4 aircrafts was armed with the Nigeria air operations certificate as well as other international certification as IATA, U5, ICAO before its grand take off.

It had also set up headquarters in Enugu as well as offices across Nigerian airports in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, P.H, Asaba and Owerri before the maiden flight.

Also, it soon acquired another plane to increase the fleet to 5 aircrafts in all.

A new office was also opened at the all new Umueri, Anambra airport in December 2021 and United Nigeria was the second airline to land on the well laid out tarmac.

All would agree that these are modest but great achievements for a young aviation business in one year.  Try making a calculation of fees, levies and taxes, salaries and wages, aviation fuel, maintenances and running offices across the states etc. you would see that a business that has lasted for a year in Nigeria has tried and deserves a pat.

In the cabin

I have only been opportune to fly United Nigeria twice and my observations combined with a brief sample of the opinions of some of the passengers I met on ground say the past one year has been so far so good. It also says the future is bright.

From my Lagos take off point heading to Asaba, I observed a very courteous staff both on ground and in the cabin.

I couldn’t say whether it was because I checked in an hour earlier as I often did in order to avoid the rush when every one including staff are under intense pressure.

None could also tell whether the extra ordinary courtesy was because it is a 50 only seater Embrear plane with few passengers to handle.

But I also noticed high level of professionalism in the smooth take off and landing of the bird by the United Nigeria Airlines pilots and ground technical staff.

This is also a pointer to the fact that management of United Nigeria Airlines place high premium on its technical matters which is very key in the aviation business.

There was more than an hour’s delay on my return trip from Asaba. Almost every airline in the world could be blamed for delayed and even canceled flights. Several reasons were given for the delay. While one of the uniformed staff said it was due to weather, another said something else.

However, a uniformed staff also went around the lounge consoling its passengers at Asaba unlike what obtained at the MM2 Ikeja Lagos where poor communication from an inaudible PA system and none or not enough on-ground staff at the lounge to lead passengers almost caused some to miss the flight.

Yet again, at both intervals, after boarding, the pilot took the bird up and landed safely at its destination about 50 mins later. This is the main.  Safe arrival has always been the best news ever for every traveler or flyer.

However, something struck me during the wait in Asaba. It became a test on the amount of goodwill Dr. Okonkwo has been able to acumulate for himself from the generality of Nigerian public including the passengers. I noted that the long wait at Asaba was non critical. The passengers seemed to understand with the airline on the bad weather reason chatting endlessly in wanton happiness. None of the passengers said pim unlike the regular agitation in such situations. The former Senatorial candidate and recently Zenith Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in the just concluded Anambra state governorship election seems to have low or no bad press at all. His people oriented character may be reason for this.

Any man who could set up The Dome, an events and entertainment place hosting the world in Abuja and run political machinery in Anambra state in the past ten years and more,  must be people oriented in the real sense of the word.

Any man who communicates through his many books and prolific lectures on communication, politics and economics is truly a man of the people and readily connects with them.

A man who could honor his late mum,  Late Mrs.  Okonkwo and his kinsman and a former leader in Nigeria’s aviation sector Sir Victor Ikwuemesi as well as Blessed Virgin Mary of Miracles, Blessed Iwene Tansi and a host of others by naming some of his aircrafts after them must have much love for humanity and loyalty to family, friends, catholic faith, community and country and a heart filled with gratitude for so much. It is my guess that this goodwill is enough to kill bad press. Many who have met him closely commend this so called PR sense.

No wonder since the first sell out of tickets on its maiden flight from Lagos MM2 to Akanu Ibiam airport Enugu, United Nigeria Airline ticket has continued to be a regular sell out.

As the one year birthday anniversary of United Nigeria Airlines draws nigh and as validity of its operations certifcate begins its second year run, let’s try and set an agenda for management. Would they be reading this? I hope they do.

First on my agenda is that more thoughts should be devoted to the consolidation of its business contracts with all its passengers and their destinations which is safe arrival in comfort and on time too.

Second is that the company should continue to do and even improve on those technical things that drive for overall safety like it has done in the past one year.

The capital intensive nature of the aviation sector notwithstanding, there is need also to invest in the acquisition of one or two bigger aircrafts in the coming year to service the new improved passenger loyalty and enlarged routes.

A bigger aircraft may avert the issue of turbulence which created panic and caused the return to take off point of a PH-ABJ bound United Nigeria Airline flight in June 2021.

This is more like a tall order in the aviation business for a company that just started operation but it is still possible to get this done except if abinitio it has been the original intention of the owners to fly smaller crafts with a managable passenger manifest.

In a recent brief chat with spokesman for the airline, Mr. Achilleus Chud-Uchegbu he disclosed with infectious enthusiasm that the past one year has “been good for the airline and its passengers and stakeholders”. According to him “United Nigeria Airline has flown to unite as the motto reads; flying to unite. The vision of United Nigeria Airlines is to be Nigeria’s number 1 airline and the mission is to continue to provide efficient and prompt services. The future is very bright as we have also started Osubi, Warri and Benin is in the offing.”

I believe him and must add that there is need to clink glasses and celebrate because like an Anambra man would say; Odiro fecha fecha.

EJIGBO COUNCIL CHAIR, BELLO OBE IN A BIG FIX

Hon. Monsuru Bello Obe

POLITICS

Executive Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area Hon Monsuru Oloyede Bello Obe is currently in a big fix as you read this.

This seeming quagmire is not about the much cracking of brain to deal with the many issues of government or the grey hairs of  name calling and criticisms of political opponents.

It is about the political ambition of two men he values so highly.

Obe's headache is that two of his main guys have ambition to go to the House of Reps come 2023 to represent Oshodi/Isolo federal constituency 2 throwing him off balance as to whom to pitch tenth with or to support and campaign for.

The two men are Hon Kehinde Bamigbetan, former Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, former SA to a Lagos governor as well as Commissioner in Lagos state and Hon Abdulkareem Abdullateef who was also an SA and a commissioner aside from holding other positions in Lagos.

Obe was a loyal Vice Chairman to Hon Bamigbetan when he was Executive Chairman of Ejigbo and is said to have benefitted so much from his political tutelage and bonding.

Many still see Bamigbetan as Obe’s chief adviser till today.

As for Hon Abdullateef, he is a close “brother” to Obe coming from same kindred and growing up together.

Their fathers are said to have grown up together and were noted among part of the builders of the community and LCDA in general.

ECD investigation reveal that Obe who really understands the precarious situation he has found himself as the march towards 2023 progresses had already declared to the gladiators that he will never be involved in their matter. He is said to have declared his neutrality early enough.

Ejigbo LCDA is one of the major areas of interest in Oshodi/Isolo federal constituency 2.

MASTER GUITARIST FORTUNE O’TEGA NAMES HIS NEW GUITAR

Fortune O'tega

SHOWBIZ

Following the tradition of some of the master guitarists who inspired him like BB King, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eddy Van Halen, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Eric Gayle and a host of others, Nigeria’s guitar export to United States Fortune O’tega has christened his latest acquisition.

The Urhobo born talent who had hands in the music of Feix Lebarty, Christy Essien Igbokwe, Mike Okri, Onyeka Onwenu and a host of others  before relocating to the US named his new instrument Kesiena, an Urhobo word for “time has come”.

Kesiena

In a chat earlier today, California based O’tega who had worked with Kurtis Blow, Steven Seagal,  Montell Jordan, Ray J, Kelly Price, Shanice Wilson and a host of other world renowned stars including Buster Rhymes, Lil Zhane and others , explained that “great players often buy different instruments for their unique flavours. Kesiena is my sixth guitar. I marshal out any one that will give me a unique sound”

George Benson

According to him, "whenever I remember how far I have gone with the guitar, I remember one of my favourite guitar mentors and friends, Cameroonian born Ethonde Roddy Fuller who introduced me to jazz playing  and gave me the foundations in the discipline of regular practice in order to perfect my art. Roddy made me know I could sound like standard players. He in fact de- Nigerianised my approach and projected me for world class playing”

THOSE WHO PLOT TO UPROOT GAJ FROM NASS.*Their game plan

Hon Engr. Ganiu Johnson

COVER STORY.

ECD can authoritatively report that there is a big plot to unseat Hon Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson, member representing Isolo Oshodi 2 at the Federal House of Representatives come 2023 elections.

Events in Ejigbo in the later part of the past year 2021 reveal these plots as politicking in the constituency has enerstly begun.

Johnson is currently running his first 4 years term at NASS.

ECD investigations disclose that this plot to dislodge Johnson is being championed by two heavy weights in Isolo Oshodi 2 Lagos politics namely Hon Kehinde Bamigbetan and Hon Abdul Kareem Abdul Lateef who also wants a taste of the NASS pie.

The Ejigbo based duo were commissioners in Lagos state and wield enormous influence across the constituency.

The next challenger for GAJ is Hon Jude Chukwuemeka Idimogu, currently member representing Oshodi/Isolo 2 at the Lagos House of Assembly.

Idimogu is also Ejigbo based.

Insiders say these men have sworn that GAJ, an Okota Isolo based politician, another former Lagos commissioner currently on the NASS saddle does not return to the federal house.

Hon Kehinde Bamigbetan

Renowned journalist and astute grassroots politician Bamigbetan was Deputy Chief Press Secretary to APC leader Bola Tinubu when he was Lagos state governor. He also was Executive Chairman, Ejigbo LCDA, Special Adviser to a governor and later commissioner for information in Lagos.

As a former LCDA chairman, he has the area at his beck and call. As SA on Communities in Lagos, he also spread further his brand across other Local governments in Lagos with more emphasis on his constituency.

Aside from having the ears of his boss, the APC leader, Bamigbetan is famed to have solid bonding with Chairmen, elders and leaders of the LCDAs in his constituency and will be banking on this wide network to clinch the position he has sought for since his tenure at the LCDA ended.

Since he announced his interest to offer himself to serve at the reps level come 2023 on his FB/meta wall triggering a wave of politicking, several groups have also endorsed him thickening the plot.  Wards and caucus meetings of his baby the Mandate Group has been rejigged to that effect. It was gathered from his inside sources that his recent bereavement due to the loss of his dear wife slowed down the politicking he had planned for the end of year.

Hon Abdulleteef Abdulkareem

On the part of Hon Abdul Kareem, he had been Chief Imam at Alausa mosque, been adviser to governor and later commissioner in Lagos.

He has jump started his Itesiwaju group, a group that has galvanised his supporters in no small way over the years to actualise his dreams of dislodging GAJ.

Those who benefitted from itesiwaju before and now are currently pledging loyalty.

His yearly Islamic crusade and outreach held in Oshodi in December with a bigger bang than before. Those who attended noted the political undertone of his speeches at the event.

He must be banking on the Muslim interests in the entire constituency where he is seen as a lord.

Again he must be relying on his son of the soil status and his stronghold on Muslim parents in Ejigbo where he is proprietor of a big school to seek the office.

Hon Jude Idimogu

For Idimogu who is just about to complete his second term at Lagos House, an upward movement to the Federal House will oil his political ambition.

The Imo state born accountant and Knight of the Catholic Church who stole away with a victory in 2015 while still a member of PDP later jumped into the APC bandwagon in 2019 and believes that the Igbo votes in the constituency will be his for the asking when the time comes.

Insiders say Idimogu also known as Igbo “apex leader” used this yuletide period just like the other contenders to continue his sensitization of his supporters on the task ahead.

However, Hon Engr Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson the man they want to uproot has been called “Beacon of Hope”, ‘Surest Deal” and other grand names by his supporters who claim he is doing well on the saddle and should sail on into a second tenure.

Johnson was also commissioner for works in Lagos and is credited to having engineered many “infrastructural development and empowerment to the people of his constituency so far”.

He is also credited to have built and rehabilitated roads, schools as well as encouraged health and skill acquisition workshops across the constituency.

One of the trusted aides of GAJ told ECD that the many “positive contributions of Hon GAJ will speak for him when the second tenure comes”.

He said “it is a distraction to begin to talk about whether Hon Johnson wants to return to NASS when he is still busy delivering goodies of development and democracy to the constituency.

“In education, blocks of classrooms have been built and delivered in Isolo, Ejigbo and other places in the constituency. Or should we talk about the road interventions across the constituency in Okota, Isolo, Ajao Estate and Ejigbo? In real fact, Hon GAJ is God sent and has in three years surpassed all reps that have represented Oshodi Isolo federal constituency 2”

Yet he is roundly being criticised for not benefiting Ejigbo.

One of his critics in Ejigbo said “Ejigbo people have not benefitted from GAJ and his activities so far. May be it was ghosts that attended the workshops that they always talk about. Infact, we have reasons to believe that he brings in ghost beneficiaries from other LGA s and constituencies neglecting Ejigbo. What did Ejigbo people do to him?”
